Feature Flick: 2012 Honda Civic Song the Next Big Hit?

Honda wanted to give its new 2012 Civic its 15 seconds of fame, while also giving music hopefuls a shot of getting theirs too. Back in June, the company announced the Sounds of Civic Facebook contest where aspiring musicians had to submit a song about the Civic. The contest came to a close earlier this month and a winner has been announced.

Jonatan Barahona won over Honda Civic Facebook fans with an original song about the Civic titled, “Forever.” Barahona went down the sentimental path in creating his song and video, focusing on how spacious the rear seats of the Civic are and all how all the roominess contributes to bringing people together.

All types of situations take place in the back seat of the Civic: a pregnant woman and her partner are rushed to the hospital, a recent grad and his family continue with the celebration, girls with their shopping bags have a blast and compare what they bought after a day of shopping, and skateboarders and their boards fit in just fine.

On top of becoming an internet star, the winner also received a 2012 Honda Civic, which will help him get to the 2011 Honda Civic Tour where he will perform live in Los Angeles.

Check out what else takes place in the backseat in the video below.

Honda Hits 'Zero-Landfill' Target in North America

Honda2
Honda's North American manufacturing plants have been on a mission to find ways to keep every bit of waste created out of the trash, and now, after a decade of work, the 14 plants send almost zero waste to landfills.

In 2001, when Honda began working on waste, it was sending 62.8 pounds of industrial waste to landfill for each vehicle produced. By mid-2012, it expects to send 1.8 pounds per vehicle.

The first facility to meet the company's zero-waste goal was Honda Manufacturing of Alabama in 2001, and a few plants that simultaneously achieved zero landfill waste earlier this year capped off the effort, said Marcos Frommer, American Honda's manager of corporate affairs.

The plants' efforts began with "dumpster dives" to get an accurate look at what trash they were making and what could be done with it.

"We literally had teams of people combing through dumpsters, sorting and analyzing what was in them in terms of volume and looking at various waste streams," Frommer said. "That's how you determine what is being wasted."

As a result, plants took hundreds of actions, including:

  • Reducing the size of steel sheets used for stamping parts
  • Reusing sand from aluminum and ferrous metal casting operations
  • Changing packaging for parts to make it recyclable
  • Building recycling bins for materials
  • Minimizing paper and plastic waste in cafeterias
  • Composting food waste

Frommer said plants in some cases had to weigh the environmental benefits and costs when deciding what to do with certain materials. "Landfilling is definitely the cheapest possible solution," he said. "These were not meant to be cost-saving initiatives—and actually, some of them are costing us more."

Sand, which is used to make molds for casting, used to be sent to landfills, where it was used it to line pits and cover layers of trash. Honda's engine plants in Ohio, Alabama and Canada now recycle their leftover sand as mulch, landscaping materials or in concrete. In 2010, the plants recycled 9,400 tons of sand.

Ten of the plants don't send any waste to landfills, and the other four plants only send two wastes, which total less than half of 1 percent of Honda's operating waste: a paint pre-treatment byproduct that is not recyclable per U.S. EPA regulations, and paper, plastic and food waste from plants in Mexico, which Honda says lack environmentally-responsible disposal options.

Thanks to the four customers that posted outstanding reviews for Schomp Honda

Dealer has a user friendly web-site which made it extremely easy to make an appointment. Appointment was confirmed by email with the name of the service advisor.

When I arrived for the appointment I was greeted immediately and everything went smoothly and was well explained. Diagnosis was quick and the battery was changed out immediately.

Might be a little more expensive than Sears or Firestone, but when these guys say the charging system is OK, I believe them.

Customer service – The salaried salesperson and set price approach means I don't have to do the back and forth bartering and the, “I have to get this approved”. Some people may like it – I don’t.

Quality of Work – since no service was performed, I didn’t rate this.

Friendliness – The staff was very friendly.

Overall Experience – This was a painless and smooth buying experience.

Price – the price was good. It was fair and below Blue Book.

The finance person (I can’t remember his name, but he had only been with Schomp a short time) was friendly, and did a good job offering options without being pushy.

Upon bringing my car in for 60,000 mile checkup, I realized that Discount Tire had not returned my wheel key when I purchased new tires. The techs at Honda helped me decide what to do and were able to remove the wheels for brake inspection without damaging the wheels. Also, since I had new tires, I was not charged for rotating and balancing.

I am always treated well and promptly when I come in for service and work was performed during the time frame that they said it would and I was out in a half an hour. My questions about coolant and timing belt service intervals was answered promptly and I was very satisfied with my visit.
